Siem Reap Local Market

We love local markets for their variety, stimulation of the senses, and fresh produce at low prices. So far, we’ve found the most unique items for sale at the Siem Reap markets. Be prepared for some usual food storage/preparation practices.

There’s lots of fresh produce.

Dried fish (hanging) and fresh fish in the basket.
All the processing is done on site so everything’s “fresh”. Despite temps being mid-30s, the smell was not horrific (in my opinion).
Not bread but honeycombs! Rafter beekeeping is a traditional Khmer method where they use rafters to mimic tree branches but place them closer to the ground for easier harvesting. The Khmer only harvest honey from the front of the hive so they don’t disturb the whole colony.
A closer inspection of these baskets reveals that these are crickets! Our local food guide explained that the locals either deep fry, or season and stir fry them.
All parts of an animal are sold. The dark stuff in the bowl is skin, including the hair/fur.
Identify the part! Ears, tongues, hooves, and intestines.
Live chickens for sale. All the chickens were very docile, including the two she is tying in the mesh bag.
Turn a corner and you’re faced with another street of stalls.
Bulk sugarcane.
We saw numerous carts like this.
They are seasoned sun-dried clams. Our food tour guide later that night recommended that we stay away from them.
And that’s it for our morning explorations of our local market. Negotiating a price for a tuk tuk ride home using googlemaps and gestures!
Thanks to Nolan for putting together this video.

  1. Fascinating. Someone should write a book about safe food choices in different countries.
