Christmas Day 2023

Neil and I were woken up around 7:00 by a somewhat wet sounding plop in the vicinity of his pillow, causing us to leap out of bed. That was the distinctive sound of a gecko falling and landing. We never saw it – not sure if that’s a good thing or not.

This is a baby one on our bathroom wall.

When we left our bedroom, we encountered our host doing many more offerings than the usual daily ones. It turns out that Christmas Day this year coincides with the special ceremony of Kajeng Keliwon for the Balinese Hindus. It’s a day to cleanse negativity from the mind and the home, and this special ceremony occurs once every 15 days.

Thunderstorms came in the afternoon after a week of dryness. That’s Nolan playing in the pool in the downpour.
Christmas dinner at the Balinese Home Cooking restaurant a few minutes walk from home. The restaurant is part of a family clan compound (this is how traditional Balinese live and there were numerous compounds, even in Denpasar and Ubud). The restaurant’s owner was very friendly and told us that males stay in their home compound after getting married while females leave for the husband’s compound on marriage. His compound has 17 buildings containing 8 families (a total of 33 family members).

A unique Christmas Day!

  1. Hope you had a Merry Christmas in what looks like a very lush and refreshing environment! The pool looks awesome and the baby gecko is soo cute, though I would worry about being a landing pad for its mother while I slept!
Wishing you an awesome New Year’s!
