Tekka Food Centre, about a 5 minute walk from our hostel (more on this later), was a favourite spot for breakfast. The kids loved the Food/Hawker Centres for their variety and fresh fruit juices. It’s got over 300 stalls containing cooked food, fresh food, clothing and a wet market.

Christmas Day 2023
Neil and I were woken up around 7:00 by a somewhat wet sounding plop in the vicinity of his pillow, causing us to leap out of bed. That was the distinctive sound of a gecko falling and landing. We never saw it – not sure if that’s a good thing or not. When we left […]
Balinese Christmas Eve
This is the view from our outdoor kitchen in Ubud, Bali. It was 32°C with cooling breezes. Cloudy in the afternoon, there was some loud thunder but no rain.
Buying Chicken in Tejakula
We stayed in Tejakula (a coastal village in the north of Bali) for 9 days. Partway through our stay, we decided that we wanted to buy some chicken. Siki (the housekeeper who lives on the property we were renting) offered to take us to do this as there are no grocery stores in this little […]
Through a village to a sand bar
Nolan took some overhead shots with his drone:
Homestay on Wayasewa Island
Bill assured us everything was good and that this is normal for them. Originally, there was only one village on the island, then there was a big landslide in 1985. At that point, the one village split into three with approximately 150 people per village. Hurricane season is Sep to Feb and the island is […]
Sheep shearing in Kaikoura
The Point is a “fifth generation family farm on the Kaikoura Peninsula” and we stayed for a night while in the area. The farm used to span 600 acres of the peninsula and had 2,000 sheep. Now, the farm is 90 acres and has 300 sheep. His sheep are a South Suffolk-Drysdale cross, which are fast […]
Whale Watching in New Zealand
Winter in New Zealand (June to August) are supposed to be the best months for whale watching. The Kaikoura peninsula, on the northeastern coast of the South Island, has some of the deepest waters in New Zealand. Because of this, there’s tons of food, and so the area has whale watching all year round. We […]
DeMilitarized Zone (DMZ) from the South Korean side
While in Seoul, we took a tour to visit the DMZ – an eye-opening and sobering experience. On the drive, our tour guide educated us about the DMZ and some of the history of Korea. He pointed out that South Koreans are educated in school about their history; and again during their mandatory time in […]
Gap Year Itinerary
We’ll update this post as we book our destinations and list sights we’ve visited. Detailed posts will trickle out over time. Nolan is posting his photos on Instagram and his drone videos on youtube. Japan: 2023Jul17 – Aug 13 Impressions: Orderly (hordes of people wait for buses and subways in loooooong queues), quiet (despite the […]
