Grand Etang

We eventually found our way to Grand Etang Natural Park after the detour at Shodoo Falls. The park contains Grand Etang Lake (“Big Pond Lake”), which is a water-filled crater of a 12,000 year old extinct volcano.

The crater collects torrential surface water, and is about 20 ft deep.

Parts of the national park receives 3 m (not a typo!) of rainfall per year! During the dry season, water from the lake supplements the water needs of St George’s.

The Mona monkey is thought to have come to Grenada on a ship from Ghana in the 18th century. Like a hamster or chipmunk, they store food in their cheeks.
