Burgos and Madrid

On our drive from Bilbao to Madrid, we had a quick stop in Burgos, at the Castillo de Burgos (Castle of Burgos).

We had lunch at a handy little playground right by the parking lot of the castle.
Exploring the ruins of the castle. There’s not much of it left.
But the views are amazing, which is why the castle was in such a strategic location high on a hilltop.
Museum of Human Evolution (shiny white building on the left) and Burgos Cathedral (on the right). The Burgos Cathedral was built in the French Gothic style in the 13th century.
Close up of the intricate work on the spires of the cathedral.
Remains of a gatehouse of the castle. This one was only used by foot travellers and the hillside was too steep and windy for carts.
More ruins of the castle.
Highlight of the castle ruins is the well, which is 64 m deep and 1.8 m in diameter.
It is accessed by six flights of spiral stairways, connected by corridors that allow light from the well shaft.
Looking down into the well. You can just see one of the windows for light in the top right quadrant.
And if you try super hard, just at the right angle, there’s still water in the well!
A closer look at the cathedral and its flying buttresses.
They have to try to climb everything 🤷🏻‍♀️
4.4 km explorations of the Castillo de Burgos. Very handy stop after 2.5 hr of driving from the apartment in Bilbao.
Time to continue our drive to Madrid. One of the many tunnels we encountered – Spain has about 250 road tunnels.
Our favourite road sign!
So which way to go?? Welcome to Madrid. It was another 2.5 hr drive from Burgos to Madrid, and an additional 2 hours driving around downtown just to get to the rental car agency!! 😡
We needed to stretch our legs after that, so explored the downtown core.
We missed the ceramic street signs in Bilbao – they’re back in Madrid.
Love this one!
Our apartment for the night.
The littles shared this bedroom.
Nolan took this one. Neil and LL had the foldout couch in the living/dining room.
One half of the kitchen – the window opens to an enclosed courtyard.
Other half of the kitchen.
Much needed relaxant after hours fighting traffic in downtown Madrid!
5.4 km to walk off our drive and hit a grocery store for supplies for dinner and travel day home to TORONTO.
After lots of walking, busses, trains, and airplanes, we finally arrive home. This is our luggage for our 2 months in Spain, which included Neil’s work equipment. Each person had a carry-on backpack and a small rolling suitcase.
