Kidless Easter Getaway

We were fortunate to be able to borrow Neil’s friend’s cottage at Lake Rousseau for the Easter long weekend in March 2016. Doubly fortunate, Grandpa and Tita Christine took care of the kids while we were away. To this day (2020), the kids reminisce about that eventful weekend, including:

  • There was a power outage due to an ice storm in Toronto, and GrandPa woke them up at 4AM to ask them if they knew how to turn on the fireplace
  • The kids watched GrandPa change out of his pajamas
  • GrandPa fed them breakfast of toast with peanut butter and jam. Nolan recalls licking off the jam, then eating the toast with peanut butter.
  • Subsequently, there was an Easter egg hunt. GrandPa said he hid them all in places that the kids could access, but there was one in the pasta drawer (I need a ladder to access that drawer), and it wasn’t found for months!
  • GrandPa hard boiled eggs so the kids could decorate their Easter eggs. Unfortunately, the ink bled through, so they couldn’t actually eat the eggs.
  • Consensus: it was an amazing weekend with GrandPa!!
It’s about 2.5 hrs from Toronto, so we arrived late on Thursday night. Early the next morning, we received messages from the kids about the overnight ice/rain storm. There’s a layer of ice over everything!
Neil and I went for a hike to explore the area. This is the view from the boathouse.
Trees for miles.
For the kids.
This “cottage” is really a mansion. Looking into the living and dining room.
Fireplace in the living room and office to the right.
Kitchen and three-season sunroom out the doors.
Hmmm … there are no shots of the 4 bedrooms and laundry room upstairs.
View out the windows from the living room.
Fire was on the whole time we were there 😀
We popped into the grocery store at Port Carling for supplies. Cooked up what looks like brown rice, bacon-wrapped steak, and veggies.
Next day, we explored the area a bit more in the morning.
Clouds moved in just after lunch, which means …
cozying up to the fireplace and reading! Yay!
Dinner looks like more rice, shrimp, peppers.
Then back to the fire we go! Yes, very boring but soooooo relaxing.
Pre-breakfast: Dutch Stroopwafels (syrup waffles) warmed on a mug of black tea.
Breakfast.
Lunch.
Dinner. Looks like the bacon-wrapped steak makes another appearance 😊
Neil working on his photography.
Using up the leftovers for brunch the next day before heading home, completely revitalized!
