Bucharest, Romania

We landed in Bucharest around noon on Jul 12, were picked up by work at the airport and given a brief tour of the local landmarks.

Palace of the Parliament. It has the distinction of being the heaviest building in the world at 9 billion pounds (4.1 million tonnes). It was designed by a team of 700 architects and took 13 years to build.
Castle playground. The kids would have loved this!
Multi-storey turret.
This one is for the kids 🙂
Teatrul Odeon – a performing arts venue.
The Stavropoleos Monastery Church was originally built in 1724 by a Greek monk.
Seen in the entry way of the church.
Entrance to Manuc’s Inn,
the oldest operating hotel in Bucharest. It was originally built in 1808 as a roadside inn.
Biserica Sfântul Anton (St Anton’s Church) is the oldest church in Bucharest. It’s built on top of an older church made of wood.
Central University Library – built in 1893. It had to be repaired when a fire broke out in the building during the 1989 Romanian Revolution.
This funky building of historic and modern is the Union of Romanian Architects.
Beautiful streetlights.
Statue of first King of Romania. In 1877, under his reign, Romania achieved independence from the Ottoman Empire. It stands in “Revolution Square”, named for the Romanian Revolution that ended Communist rule in Romania in 1989.
The Old Princely Court with the bust of Vlad Dracula (Dracula meaning “Son of the Dragon”) aka “Vlad the Impaler”. He ruled the province of Wallachia in Romania, and was vicious against the Ottoman invaders and his enemies. The Turks named him Tepes (The Impaler) for his favourite method of execution.
Despite (or maybe it was because) of his brutal methods, lawlessness was said to be rare during his reign. Side note: Bram Stoker’s Dracula was published 500 years.
One for the kids and their fascination with all things vehicular. This is the view from work.

And that was our few hours tour of Bucharest! The rest of the time was spent working. We departed Bucharest for St Petersburg on Jul 15.
