Neil and the kids signed up for whitewater rafting on the Rio de las Vueltas<\/a> the day after arriving at El Chalt\u00e9n. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

El Chalt\u00e9n is the only town along this river, and its waters are from melting glaciers in the north of Los Glaciares National Park. To make it more interesting, they signed up for the last day of the rafting season (April 29). It’s the last day of the season because Patagonian winter in this area begins in late April. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were light flurries when we arrived in El Chalt\u00e9n the day before the activity. Flurries changed to blustery snow on the morning of the activity, and the temperature was at 0\u00b0C when they started out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They were picked up at 10AM and taken to the Comarka Rafting dome to put on their gear. The company provided wetsuits (including gloves and boots) and many of layers of warm clothing.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Loli is 50 years young and lives in El Calafate (almost 4 hr drive to El Chalten). He has 8 kids, the oldest being 32. Loli drives a snow groomer in the winter months.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Loli’s 23-year old son Tom\u00e1s (not in this picture) was the safety kayaker.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
