Siem Reap Local Market
We love local markets for their variety, stimulation of the senses, and fresh produce at low prices. So far, we’ve found the most unique items for sale at the Siem Reap markets. Be prepared for some usual food storage/preparation practices. There’s lots of fresh produce.
Vietnamese Egg Coffee / Cocoa
During our food tour in Hanoi, we were introduced to egg coffee. Our guide explained that Nguyen Giang, who lived in Hanoi, created ‘egg coffee’ in the 1940s due to the scarcity of milk.
Biking in Luang Prabang
In Laos, we were fortunate enough to stay at a guesthouse that provided complimentary bikes. We’re pretty glad for his insistence as it was quite the sight, and also a unique experience! Opportunities for donations are scattered throughout Level 16 and the very top. The […]
The Poo Poo Barber Club
Neil and I left the kids schooling at the Bangkok hostel one afternoon to run some quick errands.
Mango Smoothies ++
Our first stop during our markets tour was the Maeklong station, which is the site of the famous Maeklong Railway Market, aka “umbrella pulldown market” (more on that excitement in a future post).
Boat Noodle Soup
Our lunch after our longtail boat ride through the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market was bowls of “boat noodle soup”. Our guide said that one of her previous clients from the US showed her a picture of the lady on a menu and restaurant in LA. Someone had taken her picture and used it to brand […]
Snacks and lunch? in Ipoh
On our exploration through Concubine Lane, we encountered an interesting snack. Everyone enjoyed them so much that we got a second helping. The size of these “snacks” was a huge surprise.
