We love local markets for their variety, stimulation of the senses, and fresh produce at low prices. So far, we’ve found the most unique items for sale at the Siem Reap markets. Be prepared for some usual food storage/preparation practices. There’s lots of fresh produce.
During our food tour in Hanoi, we were introduced to egg coffee. Our guide explained that Nguyen Giang, who lived in Hanoi, created ‘egg coffee’ in the 1940s due to the scarcity of milk.
In Laos, we were fortunate enough to stay at a guesthouse that provided complimentary bikes. Initially, we weren’t keen on biking given the insanity of traffic in Luang Prabang, but it’s not too bad since everyone drives slowly (because of the chaos). We also only biked during off-peak times and never once it got dark.

Our first stop during our markets tour was the Maeklong station, which is the site of the famous Maeklong Railway Market, aka “umbrella pulldown market” (more on that excitement in a future post).
