In June, we stayed for 7 days in the small town of Tilcara, in the remote northwest of Jujuy (pronounced “hoo-hwee”), Argentina. From here, it’s about a 2 hour drive to Salinas Grandes, Argentina’s largest salt flats. It’s in the Puna (aka Antiplano), which is a windswept plateau in the Andes, and the Puna in […]

Horseback riding in Chilean Patagonia
Since we started our year of travel in June 2023, Felix has been asking to do a horseback riding activity. Neil finally found a unique experience that everyone was excited about with Horse Connection Patagonia, in the Torres del Paine. Our guide Lynn arranged for our transportation to the starting point, and we were picked […]
Whitewater rafting in Argentinian Patagonia
Neil and the kids signed up for whitewater rafting on the Rio de las Vueltas the day after arriving at El Chaltén. El Chaltén is the only town along this river, and its waters are from melting glaciers in the north of Los Glaciares National Park. To make it more interesting, they signed up for […]
Hunting with the Hadzabe
One of our activities during our 10-day safari in Tanzania was to go hunting with the Hadzabe tribe in the Lake Eyasi region. The day before our activity, we picked up Gichiro, the guide who would accompany us to the tribe. Since the Hadzabe are hunter gatherers, they are nomadic and Gichiro had arrived a […]
Exercising camels in Dubai
We were not able to attend a camel race in Dubai since the season was finished. Fortunately, we found the Arabian Desert Camel Riding Center – the first licensed camel riding school and home of the first women’s camel racing team in the United Arab Emirates. Because of the heat later in the day, we […]
Khmer Mango Shake
This is a Khmer (pronounced ‘khmay’) ‘mango shake’. It consists of slightly green chopped up mango shaken with a spice mix that was blow-your-head-off spicy!
Siem Reap Local Market
We love local markets for their variety, stimulation of the senses, and fresh produce at low prices. So far, we’ve found the most unique items for sale at the Siem Reap markets. Be prepared for some usual food storage/preparation practices. There’s lots of fresh produce.
Vietnamese Egg Coffee / Cocoa
During our food tour in Hanoi, we were introduced to egg coffee. Our guide explained that Nguyen Giang, who lived in Hanoi, created ‘egg coffee’ in the 1940s due to the scarcity of milk.
Biking in Luang Prabang
In Laos, we were fortunate enough to stay at a guesthouse that provided complimentary bikes. Initially, we weren’t keen on biking given the insanity of traffic in Luang Prabang, but it’s not too bad since everyone drives slowly (because of the chaos). We also only biked during off-peak times and never once it got dark.
Rice Farming Experience in Laos
One of our experiences in Luang Prabang, Laos was to learn about rice farming. We booked with The Living Land Farm, which is a farm shared by multiple families in the nearby villages. They grow rice (obviously), and organic vegetables and flowers with the aim to educate farming students in sustainable agricultural practices. They also […]
