Gap Year Itinerary

We’ll update this post as we book our destinations and list sights we’ve visited. Detailed posts will trickle out over time.

Nolan is posting his photos on Instagram and his drone videos on youtube.

Japan: 2023Jul17 – Aug 13

Impressions: Orderly (hordes of people wait for buses and subways in loooooong queues), quiet (despite the density of the population in Tokyo and Kyoto, even during rush hour, traffic noise is muted – horns are extremely rare), people adhere to the rules and beware if you step out of bounds (you get whistled at instantly).

Komagane, near Nagano Jul 22 – Jul 26

Kyoto Jul 27 – Aug 9

Fukuoka Aug 10 – 13

South Korea: 2023Aug14 to Aug 26

Impressions: Smelling the sewers in Busan and getting bowled over by a short curly-haired elderly women because you had the audacity to be where she wanted to go. They just push through. They’re not being intentionally rude it’s a cultural thing.

Busan Aug 14 – 20

Seoul Aug 21 – 26

New Zealand: 2023Aug27 to Sep 22

Impressions: Landscape in the North Island was unique to us – huge ferns making it look prehistoric, tropical palms mixed with conifers, steam vents and lunar-like landscapes due to volcanoes. South Island landscape is similar to western Canada – many lakes are glacier fed and so have the turquoise colour.
