Different kind of model ship building

[Edited to add newly found pictures during the build.] In one of the nautical museums that we visited in Crete, we saw ship models, including one that was a full-sized replica of an ancient Greek ship, built using ancient techniques. This is Lara’s version.

This is her starting point. Looking closely, you might be able to see her pencil drawings for the parts of the ship. Incidentally, she’s wearing an apron that she made out of an old mattress cover.
There’s a lot of cutting
Assembling the ship – in Mom and Dad’s bedroom and Mom’s office.
Felix helps out.
The ship is covered with Neil’s friend’s grandfather’s strips of veneer. It was very old and brittle so Lara had to soak them to soften them before using. I’m glad she didn’t try to waterproof it with tar and beef fat like the ancient Greeks!
A look back – she found the very first sailboat she made when she was about 5.
The completed ship, adorned with Calico Critters.
It even has a dinghy – safety is important.

  1. Wow. There be a lot of technical speak in them words. Lines, stern, furling, cargo holds, etc. Well done Lara! A well thought out design.
