Departure and arrival adventures

The weekend before our departure, Felix attended a friend’s birthday party. A few days later, his friend’s mom called to say that she’d tested positive for Covid. She drove Felix to and from the party. Fortunately, both were masked.

The day before we were to leave for Greece, Felix started feeling unwell. He was feverish, lethargic, and nauseous. Our kids often get a 24-hour bug and we weren’t sure if this was one of those cases or the start of Covid.

Fortunately, he tested negative for Covid early the next morning, and after sleeping through the whole morning, he was back to his usual self. 😅
Getting ready to head out. It’s still a LOT of luggage.
Our first view of Greece.
We left Toronto around 7:30PM on Friday June 24 and arrived in Athens around noon on Saturday after a 9 1/2 hour flight. Conveniently, the rental car was brought to Arrivals, and we completed the checks and paperwork in the midst of busy noisy traffic. During this process, we were entertained by an incensed woman who jumped out of her car to yell at another driver. She was able to continue her tirade as her car began rolling away and she chased after it. She did manage to hop back in the driver’s seat before it hit another car. Disconcerting start to driving in Greece. 😳
It was an uneventful hour drive out of Athens to the Corinth Canal, where we stopped for a bite to eat. Two plates of souvlaki with French fries and a basket of bread for €14 was our first meal in Greece. We then purchased five 1L bottles of water to wash away the salt and cool ourselves down.
The Corinth Canal, started in 1882 and completed in 1893, is 6.4 km long, 24.6 m wide and 8 m deep at sea level; it’s solely used for small tourist ships these days. In ancient times, the Greeks hefted their ships onto boat cradles on wheels and dragged them along a grooved path to avoid having to go around the peninsula (a dangerous 185 nautical mile trip).
The canal walls are about 52 m high, and landslides occur frequently. There was nothing exciting happening during our brief stop on the way to Nafplio where we stayed for 6 days.
Don’t miss the last half of the video, including the crunch, of our parking lot adventure.
