One of the highlights in the north of the Peloponnese Peninsula is the Voraikos Gorge, and the Odontotos Railway, a rack railway that parallels the river in the gorge between the towns of Diakopto (on the coast) to Kalavrita (in the mountains).

Our stay in Nafplio
We spent 6 days in the city of Nafplio and visited a couple of its beaches, explored its centre, and roamed two of its fortresses, Palamidi and Akronafplia. Where did we stay and how was day-to-day life? Due to some technical issues, we lost a bunch of photos and movies. Fortunately, Lara had been FaceTiming […]
Palamidi Fortress
We saw Palamidi Fortress from almost every location while exploring in Nafplio, and early on a Wednesday morning, we finally hiked up to explore it. The hill is named after the physician and astronomer Palamides, who was a a hero of the Trojan War. The views as we climb. Click the arrows to move through […]
Akronafplia Fortress
During our explorations in lower Nafplio, we wanted to find a way to the Akronafplia Fortress. This included many stairs and narrow alleyways.

Arkadiko Bridge
On the way home from the Sanctuary of Asklepios (Epidavros), we took a slight detour to check out what is believed to be the oldest Mycenean bridge in Europe. The Mycenaean civilization existed prior to the Ancient Greek civilization, and consisted of mainland Greeks who were influenced by people in the Mediterranean and Crete.
Sanctuary of Asklepios
On one of Neil’s vacation days, we drove 30 mins from Nafplio to visit the Sanctuary of Asklepios at Epidavros. The highlight for Felix was the variety of vehicles he found on the site.
Two beaches near Nafplio
One of our first priorities in Nafplio after settling in and sourcing our groceries was to find beach. The weather was scorching and we desperately wanted to cool off. Paralia Arvanitias (Arvanitias Beach) is a 5 min drive or 15 min walk from our airbnb. The other beach we frequented was Karathonas Beach.
Departure and arrival adventures
The weekend before our departure, Felix attended a friend’s birthday party. A few days later, his friend’s mom called to say that she’d tested positive for Covid. She drove Felix to and from the party. Fortunately, both were masked. The day before we were to leave for Greece, Felix started feeling unwell. He was feverish, […]
2-month trips with carry-on luggage
When we spent two months in Spain back in 2019, we travelled only with carry-on luggage, which on most airlines is a small suitcase that you can heft into the overhead bin and a small backpack/handbag to fit under the seat in front of you. The reasons for this were: Checking a bag costs extra […]
