Concussion

On Friday, Neil and I drove down to Sick Kids Hospital to pick up a streamer for him. After school ended, while the boys were goofing around, Nolan picked Felix up by his ankles and subsequently dropped him, on his head. We returned home a short while later to find a very subdued Felix.

He lay on the couch with his processors off, with what we suspected was a bad headache. He was confused, incoherent, and couldn’t form words. When he started vomiting, we decided to take him to the emergency department – our second trip this month.

We were hustled through very quickly, without completing registration to a room where he was hooked up for monitoring.
On the transfer from the wheelchair to the bed, he hugged the nurse and tried to climb her, thinking she was me. He was very confused.
A doctor saw him and ordered a CT Scan. This is after the scan, waiting to return to his room. The results came back normal, but the doctors wanted to monitor him since he was still vomiting and still confused.
He slept through a lot of it! Each time he was woken up for checks, he asked “Wha’s happening?” or “Is this school?”
He was given an anti nausea medication that dissolved in the mouth. It was a bit of challenge to get him to accept it. He still threw up after.
When he was able to pass a number of tests, he was released with instructions for no screen time, lots of rest, and a gradual return to normal.
The next day, he was coherent and playing quietly but unable to wear his processors as they triggered headaches.
On Monday, he started reported hearing noises in his left ear.

He hasn’t attended school this week since it’s virtual, and he’s worn his processors for only very short periods of time. Otherwise, he’s back to his normal cheerful self. We were warned that it could take weeks for things to return completely back to normal, and we have further followups scheduled with his pediatrician and with Sick Kids (to check his implants).
