Happy Chinese New Year – Rat

It was actually a very last minute decision to do hot pot for New Year’s Eve, thanks to the gentle encouragement (Neil) and more forceful urging (a friend). As the friend pointed out, hot pot was specifically designed for Moms to not have to slave in the kitchen for holiday dinner since everyone cooks for themselves. It’s the easiest celebration/holiday dinner ever!

Lara and Felix got dressed up for the occasion.
Felix was particularly proud of his footwear 🙂
Helping to lay out the items we’ll be cooking in the hot pot.

Make your own dipping sauce from choice of chilli sauce, soy sauce+lime juice, chopped garlic, grated ginger, and chopped green onions.

Soup stock: some sad looking green onions, frozen chunks of ginger and dying celery I was saving for stock, $2 worth of pork bones, some freezer-burnt leftover clam meat, one lonely jalapeno, a handful of dried red dates, and shitake. Neil and I walked over to the Korean stores at Yonge and Sheppard to pick up add-ins: shabu-shabu beef, yam noodles, konnyaku noodles, dumplings, lettuce, and bok choy. The Korean sushi rolls weren’t for the hot pot.
Gimme MORE FOOD!!!
Red envelope time.
Lara said this was her second favourite holiday! Her first was Christmas and that’s because she got two weeks off school. When quizzed as to what made Chinese New Year her second favourite, her response was a very loud “FOOD!”. As Neil said, she is very much my daughter in that way 😛
All three put their lucky money into savings.
