We visited this area with James and his two boys, Caiden and Brendan, who joined us from Calgary. The cave was accidentally discovered by workers blasting at a nearby quarry in 1957. Despite a blast exposing the chasm, the mining company continued working until 1976. The original blast hole is still used today to enter […]

Gaztelugatxe (Castle Rock)
Gaztelugatxe is a tiny island in the Bay of Biscay and contains a tiny church and the San Juan de Gaztelugatxe hermitage. The hermitage dates from the 10th century and is dedicated to John the Baptist. It is thought to have been established by the Knights Templar.
Ermita Nuestra Señora de la Hoz, Cascada de Tobera, Cascada de Pedrosa de Tobalina
Those melodious names are for a spectacular hermitage and waterfalls close to Frías.
Frías
Frías. Aside from being a medieval city, it has a castle with courtyard, moat, turrets, and a medieval bridge. And there were waterfalls close by. Perfect for a day trip!
Paragliding at Aizkorri Beach
We didn’t actually have the intention or know about paragliding when we headed to Aizkorri Beach. It was a spur of the moment decision. Side note: this post has some cool videos!
First day in Bilbao
We decided to take an easy first day in Bilbao and just stroll close to home. There’s also a collection of anchors from various ships.
Welcome to Bilbao
We arrived in our airbnb at Bilbao in the early evening, and were taken through the home by our host who moved out of the apartment to live with a friend for the duration of our stay. Fortunately, the apartment came with a parking spot. Navigating to said parking spot, however, was a bit of […]
Lafuente to La Hermida to Santillana del Mar to Limpias to Bilbao
It’s only about a 2 hour drive to Bilbao from Lafuente, so we took the time to take in a hike and check out some sights along the way. We explored the whole town, about a 10 minute walk from end to end, and found a number of interesting and beautiful historic sights. Next stop, […]
Cottage in Lafuente
Our accommodations in Lafuente was a “cottage” in the tiny village of Lafuente. The village comprises a handful of homes and a church, nestled in the mountains. Every few days, a van makes its stops through these tiny villages to sell bread and other staples. The mountains were the kids’ favourite spot in Spain.
Bajo los Picos Hike
Traslated as “below the peaks”, this circular hike had truly amazing views of the mountains. It starts in the tiny village of Mogrovejo, which had 44 inhabitants in 2008. It doesn’t look as if it’s grown much since then. The recommendation was to start the hike early in the morning and we were very glad […]
