Since we can’t travel due to covid, we’re going to continue travelling vicariously through our memories.
In January, 2008, when Nolan was 4 months old, we spent 2 weeks in Barbados (Jan 1-15). We were so fortunate to stay with Aunt Mary and Uncle Tony, and spend loads of time with them.
Lounging with Uncle Tony.Where am I? What is this new world? Where’s the snow?Looking at the place we’re staying in from the back yard.Aunt Mary busy with her knitting.Wheee!Wow – look at how Neil’s hands compares to Nolan’s torso.
Nolan was a pretty good sleeper – during the daytime!
Crazy new parents … bring cloth diapers on vacation. What the heck were we thinking!?!🤔Traveler’s Palm, related to the BananaSome kind of GIANT cactus. It’s either really old or grows really fast. Which do you think it is?Bare Frangipani tree.Vacation means eating and reading. Actually, any time is good for eating and reading 😂The play pen in which Nolan slept – he can’t roll/climb and fall out of it.
Scenes from around the house – it revolves around the baby 😊
Aunt Mary and Tony took us for drives to see the different landscapes of Barbados:
Abandoned old resort on the coast.A frequent activity while out and about – diaper changes on available flat surfaces.Cuddles!A Mercedes-Benz bus.
The Crane Resort, the first resort in Barbados:
Cooling off!
We spent one afternoon at the beach (update from Aunt Mary: this beach was Miami Beach, also called Enterprise Beach). The beach had almond trees, which provided lots of shade. As usual, every chance Neil and I got, we READ 😉 This was also where Aunt Mary had Nolan in her lap in a sheltered cove to experience the ocean for his first time (unfortunately, no pictures of that momentous event). How wee he was to fit on that beach chair. [Click to view more slides.]
I’m getting sleeeeeeepy ….
We found lots of edible items on our walks:
The master bedroom of one of the newly constructed houses that we explored.Wow. A Moke – no doors, no roof, mini runaround car. Apparently its name means ‘donkey’. Tony, your next car perhaps?Ingenious mailbox.A frequent sleeping position > fingers straightened out.
Aunt Mary and Tony – almost all these shots are taken by Neil while waiting for me to breastfeed Nolan in the car. The one on the top right is taken by me while we’re waiting for Neil on his sailing adventure:
Neil and I even managed to squeeze in two Scrabble games:
Thanks to Aunt Mary for this photo.Oi, those diapers! Still can’t believe we travelled with cloth diapers 🤦🏻♀️
Neil’s baby carrying positions:
We also spent a few days at Cattlewash, thus named because farmers would herd their cows into the large swells to wash off the parasites. We didn’t see any cows bathing.Amazing frame for this picture. Can you find Nolan in this picture?

Every day, these three were out there, fishing. Peace among the rollers.Nolan and Mom.A starfruit tree!!In a grove of starfruit trees!! Barbados has so many different types of fruit trees.Neil went for a sail on the Ocean Racing Challenge. I think it was less of a racing challenge (only two boats racing) but fun nonetheless. At least, it was a chance to get out on the water in a sailboat. There he goes.We hung out in the shade on shore.Dinner cooking – we used every pot and every element! Our dining room in Cattlewash.Hmmmm … I wonder what we could be doing here? Washing vegetables?Nope, washing Nolan, who is clearly unimpressed.
The landscape at Cattlewash:
On the flight home, we were lucky enough to score the bulkhead, which holds a bassinet. Looks very peaceful and relaxing but it took about a dozen tries before he would stay asleep when we tried to put him in it. Pictures are truly just a snapshot of one millisecond in time.
These are just a few of the over a thousand pictures from this trip – first international trip with the first baby and all that. 😉
