Backyard Redo

Given that we’re home so much more due to covid, we decided to do some work on the yard. It started with pretty minor things like cleaning up, weeding, and trying to get the grass to grow.

Things didn’t really progress – so in October, we built a spreadsheet and started getting quotes for some landscaping work. In November, the contractors started work. In 5 days, they completed the work in the backyard.

The yard gets a lot of use – kids ride their bikes on it and the play structure takes on different roles. We bought it at a garage sale for $120 (used by one little girl for a couple of years). New $699.
In June, the “grass” looked great – as long as you didn’t look too closely (it was a lot of clover and weeds)! Then things took a drastic downturn – I killed everything by forgetting to account for the brand of fertilizer spreader in the calculations to fertilize the lawn.
The lawn is dead from over-fertilization.

Most of it went to the dump.
But Nolan use part of it to modify the dolly into a forklift for Felix.
It came in handy for moving things around.
Sometimes, for no reason other than to move it 🤷🏻‍♀️
Moving the apple tree to the back right corner and taking all the grass out was one day’s work for 3 guys.
Then putting down top soil,
and levelling it.
Don’t walk on it!

Hardscaping in progress. We’ve got a small gardening lean-to that will go beside the shed on its right.
Completed hardscaping in front of the shed – plenty of room to wheel the bikes out and also do various repairs.

We’re supposed to stay off the grass … so Felix being the lightest is cleaning the leaves.

  1. Evolution. As the family needs changed so did the backyard, and the savings account. Good record keeping.
