Bilbao Museo Arqueológico and Street Performances

The only plan for today was to wander around the city.

Ran into this street performer early on in our explorations. It was about a 20 min show and she had the kids entranced.
We chanced on the Archaeological Museum, housed in an old train station. The station used to house a funeral chapel as it was beside the first cemetery in Bilbao.
The museum was closed, but we were able to wander the courtyard and some of its areas. The sandstone sculpture is ‘Mikeldi’ from around 2 to 4 BC. It supposedly represents a pig or a bull with a disc between its legs.
Some of these ‘giants’ are over 3m tall and elaborately dressed.
The giant figures in the courtyard and in various areas of the museum are used in street processions during the Fiestas. The Fiestas (Semana Grande de Bilbao or The Great Week) is celebrated over 9 days in August.
The ‘giants’ represent important characters in Bilbao’s history.
There are heads too! The kids called this one “Mr Potato Head”
Exiting the museum.
This second street performer juggled fire and had loads of fun with the audience participation.
On the way home, we checked out a street party. With all the dancing, what happens at the end of this video is inevitable 🤷🏻‍♂️
Our 16.4 km jaunt.
