The Bilbao Fine Arts Museum is one of the larger museums in Spain and contains over 10,000 pieces. We’d walked by on previous excursions and decided to check it out. The older kids are copying the statue.Hanging Figures by Juan Muñoz. A bit disquieting for the kids. This exhibit is called Double Trouble. I’m looking at you, kids. 😊
The whole room was full of busts. This was the one he liked best. The Street Sweeper, painted in 1890.Jesters Playing “Cochonnet” by Eduardo Zamacois in 1868.That turned out to be a 12.6 km excursion! In the evening, we decided to visit Vizcaya Bridge (discovered by Nolan during a trip to the Maritime Museum). We drove the shipping route to Getxo (about a 20 min drive).Cruise ship dockingEl Abra marina in the background.Running free!Highlight of the excursion: Vizcaya Bridge, the world’s oldest aerial transfer bridge, completed in 1893.Its design had to allow for tall ship traffic, and transport human and cargo, without requiring a massive structure with long ramps. It was the first bridge in the world to transport people and vehicles in a gondola and is the model for other similar bridges around the world. 24/7, every 8 minutes, the gondola transports up to 6 vehicles and dozens of passengers across the estuary. We’re waiting patiently for our turn 😁
The bridge has only been shut down once. During the Spanish Civil War there was an explosion on the upper deck, which took four years to repair. There’s lots of activity on the estuary to entertain us during our wait.
This appears to be an all womens group.Nolan had to explore the high waters …
Our turn!!Interesting sign.Old relic between the modern buildings.Monkeys on the lightweight twisted steel cables of the bridge.4.4 km explorations.
