La Cucaña

The Festival of the Velá de Santa Ana is one of the oldest festivals celebrated in the Triana neighbourhood of Seville. La Cucaña is an activity where contestants walk along a greased pole to grab a flag at the end. Three of them of have to succeed for the La Cucaña to be completed.

Triana Bridge
View from the bridge – stalls set up for the festival.
The pole and where the participants will wait for their turn.
Amazing amount of preparations
Divers ….
Two of them – just in case.
Ah ha! This explains the need for the divers. Is he really going to stand on a ladder in a small boat!?!?
Yup! That’s a bucket of grease that he uses to smear the length of the pole!
And now attaching the flag the contestants have to grab.
Spectators on shore and on the river.
And then the fun starts.
The contestants start slipping …
… and sliding …
… and flipping …
… and inevitably falling.
They start practicing when young 🙂
Until one makes it to the end to grab the flag!
Best seats for watching the action.
YUM!
